FREEDOM rollout completes in flagship ARC store

13 March 2006

Park Road is Anglia Coops flagship department store. At the weekend, the aging IBM 4690 system was replaced with MATRA's FREEDOM software - completing the roll-out across the full ARCs estate of approaching 100 stores.

The implementation represents further successful evidence of MATRA's unique ability to reduce costs by re-using even the oldest of hardware. In a store of 30 registers, ARCs have only installed 12 new terminals and have re-used 18 of the old IBM tills - even though they are nearly 15 years old and have only 1 or 2 Mb of memory.

Simon Towner, MATRA's Operations Director said

“When we began to discuss the idea of driving old registers such as 4683s as thin clients we received a muted response. A few years on, our thin client technology is rock solid and we are using it in numerous guises, from old register protection through to mobile devices, kiosks and self checkouts. Interest in FREEDOM and its thin client ability is really starting gather momentum.”
